MALIGNANT MELANOMA OF THE SKIN

DISTINCTIVE FEATURES

The malignant melanoma cells may produce melanin. The melanin pigment is stored within melanosomes.
Melaonosomes appear as membrane bound, electron dense granules. Within these granules, parallel lamellae, or helical or zip-zag structures with a periodicity of 8-10 nm may be seen.
Some malignant melanomas do not produce melanin (amelanotic malignant melanoma)
